Interesting animations of Walmart & Target geographic expansion:
Random thoughts:
- Good data visualizations are rare.
- Both firms have been expanding for over 40 years.
- Walmart grew methodically by region. Target bounced around.
- Walmart is everywhere. Not news, but still mind-boggling.
- All those leases to cover!

Walmart is a distribution efficiency play, geos matter
Target is a merchandising play, demos matter
Wonder where they got the data?
Nathan Yau got it from Thomas Holmes. Raw data here.
Now that’s fun!!
Alan, these visualizations are all too rare, and fun.
One small correction: Both Wal-Mart and Target own their stories and these days the land under them as well. So, I believe, do Sears & Kmart.
Big investment, but it means no lease payments.
