I’ve previously recommended Steve Souder’s book on speeding up your site.
Here’s a video from Steve speaking at Google in November (he was at Yahoo then, hadn’t yet joined Google). Audio is poor, but content is amazing. Buy your engineers pizza and have them watch this over lunch tomorrow.

What first comes to my mind is that existing browsers are that far from perfect. I guess everyone notices the cases when the same page are displayed faster/slower in different browsers. The browsers development teams should pay more attention to the speed, but not the useless features.
