An old but worthwhile post: Modern Life’s Stuart Brown explains Technorati rank.
Brown observes that a power law (square root) well describes s blog popularity.
Neat stuff, and quite consistent with the random scale-free network models described in Albert Laszlo’s book, Linked.
Relevance to marketers?
Being a hub matters.
Being early to market and being well-connected offers high barriers to entry against those who follow.
