In the category of “things that make you go hmm”, John Chow points out that Google pays FireFox for clicks generated from the FFox search box, and suggests FFox may eventually become Google’s largest traffic source.
This makes perfect sense once you think about it, but it hadn’t ever crossed my mind. Personally, the FireFox search box is how I reach Google for every search I do.
Chow reports this space generated $50mil in 2005.
Assuming no growth from 2005 to 2006 (gross underestimate), and assuming my Firefox layout is pretty typical with a 1.5 inch by 0.25 inch Google search box, that works out to an annual rent rate of roughly $19 billion dollars per square foot. Hmm.
