What We’re Reading: AJAX

I asked a former colleague who’s now web designing at Yahoo for AJAX book suggestions
(I’m interested in web technology as well as web marketing). She said DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model and Head Rush Ajax were recommended at a recent Y! training.
Head Rush Ajax is fluffy — the content to graphical-eye-candy ratio is quite low.

But Jeremy Keith’s DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model is really decent. Keith’s suggestions on using javascript in unobtrusive ways to separate behavior from structure is spot-on. He offers good advice for ensuring pages degrade gracefully (that is, still function) when javascript isn’t available, and we liked his examples of using DOM scripting to enhance markup: unobtrusive javascript.

Over the next few years, AJAX will start to transform the web, which will in turn transform online e-commerce.
(Drag-and-drop shopping carts, anyone?)
If you develop your e-commerce site internally, start feeding AJAX books to your developers now…
